Giro d’Italia #16: Brutal stage shakes the GC

Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo) won stage 16 of the Giro d’Italia, winning from a stage long breakaway. Jan Hirt (Team Astana) was 2nd and Fausto Masnada (Androni-Giacottoli) placed 3rd.

Even without the Passo Gavia, stage 16 of the Giro d’Italia was just brutal. The 194km stage was raced in the cold and wet, with the Mortirolo climb ensuring the race exploded into pieces.

For Team Dimension Data, it was a day of pure survival. Thankfully all our riders did survive and made it to the finish. There were significant time gaps today though, with the biggest shake up being the pre-race favourite, Primoz Roglic losing over a minute to the Maglia Rosa.

Tomorrow will be another mountain stage, in the Trentino region. An area Ben O’Connor has fond memories of, looking back to his stage and white jersey win at last year’s Tour of the Alps.
