Alexander Foliforov (Gazprom) won the stage 15 individual mountain time trial of the Giro d’Italia. The leader of the race overall, Steven Kruijswijk (LottoNL-Jumbo) finished in 2nd on the stage and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) was the rider in 3rd place.
For Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka the main priority on today’s testing 10.8km uphill course was for Kanstantsin Siutsou to conserve his 9th place on the overall classification. The rest of our African Team riders were really just looking to get through the stage without having to burn too many unnecessary matches.
Foliforov set an incredibly fast time of 28’39” after starting mid pack today and it was clear that this time would be hard to beat considering that the wind changed direction on the top of the mountain in the afternoon. All our African Team riders got up the climb okay and Siutsou did a really strong ride, powering through the final 2km headwind really well.
Siutsou finished 1’59” down on the stage winner but most importantly he kept his 9th place overall and even put a bit of time between himself and the rider in 10th position. The Giro d’Italia now goes into its 3rd rest day tomorrow before the final tough 3rd week begins on Tuesday.
Igor Anton – Rider
The Giro is here. You can feel the body is tired but it is normal because it is already the 15th stage and after yesterday, I need rest. I took today’s chrono easy because it is better to stay in a good condition for next week. I have 3 stage options next week and I would really like to take one of these chances. It will either be on Thursday, Friday or Saturday in those mountain stages. After today though we are really happy with Kanstantsin and his position in the general classification.
