Dario Cataldo (Astana) won stage 15 of the Giro d’Italia beating his stage-long breakaway companion, Matteo Catteneo (Androni) into 2nd place. Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) was the first of the GC favourites home, placing 3rd.
It was a long day at the Giro d’Italia, with today’s stage measuring at just over 231km. The majority of the climbing also only came in the final 70km of the stage, making for a tough day out.
Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka had hopes of making the break today, but Movistar were not allowing too many riders up the road. Eventually, once two riders got clear, they were given some breathing space.
We had to look for some opportunities in the finale, but it was really down to just hanging on to the GC favourites. Amanuel Ghebreizabhier showed he is coming into his own this Giro, and rode strongly once again today.
Our Eritrean rider was our first home, just 3’00” down on the stage victor. Our remaining riders all also crossed the line in Como, and are no doubt looking forward to tomorrow’s rest day.
“Amanuel has had two good day’s now, on two of the toughest stages of the Giro. For a young guy, he is showing good strength. We hope he continues in this way so that it increases our chances of pulling off a result in the final week of this very difficult Giro.” – Alex Sans Vega
