Giro d’Italia #14: Italian Alps take no prisoners

Richard Carapaz (Movistar) raced to the stage 14 victory of the Giro d’Italia and into the Maglia Rosa. Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) was 2nd on the stage and Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) placed 3rd.

The 14th stage of the Giro d’Italia was packaged into just 131km, but it sure was loaded with dynamite. With the stage going over two big category 1 climbs, and three other categorised climbs in the Aosta valley, there were explosions both at the front and back of the race.

Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka had Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier nearer to the front of the war zone today, as our Eritrean found himself in the company of the Maglia Rosa, Jan Polanc (Team UAE-Emirates). The main GC contenders were just up the road though, with Carapaz riding himself into the lead.

Our other Team Dimension Data riders were mid-field, and trying to save something for the possible breakaway stages still to come. Today it was the GC riders that took all the spoils though, with Carapaz winning by over 1’30” from the 2nd placed rider.

Ghebreigzabhier finished with Polanc, some 7’41” down on the Movistar stage winner. All our other riders finished well within the time limit, with the grupetto coming home another 11 minutes after our final finisher.
