Ilnur Zakarin (Katusha) won stage 13 of the Giro d’Italia, beating Mikel Nieve (Mitchelton-Scott) to the summit of the magnificent Ceresole Reale. 3rd place went the way of Mikel Landa (Movistar).
With 3 big climbs on today’s menu at the Giro d’Italia, the finale being 34km long up to Lagu Serru on Ceresole Reale, it was always going to be a big day for the GC contenders.
For the fast men though, it was a suffer fest, one which Mark Renshaw pulled the plug midway through the stage to bring his 2019 Giro d’Italia to an end.
The rest of our team gave their all to support Ben O’Connor leading into the final climb before they settled into the rhythm of the grupetto. Our Australian hung on as long as he could but would go on to finish 12’49” down on Zakarin. The result did see O’Connor climb 9 places on GC, to now sit 29th.
Tomorrow is sure to be another big day at the Giro d’Italia with no less than 5 categorised climbs in just 131km.
