Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) dominated the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia, winning the 8.2km by a clear 19 seconds and taking the first Pink leaders jersey of the race. Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) was 2nd and Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) 3rd.
Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka, without a clear favourite for today’s type of stage, were out to give the tough course a good crack. Ben O’Connor was our rider with the most on the line, as he looks to mount a GC challenge this year once again.
Our Australian finished 1’12” down on Roglic, in 38th, but well within range of many GC contenders like Mikel Landa (Movistar). Our fastest rider of the day was Enrico Gasaprotto who placed 31st.
In his debut grand tour, Scott Davies put in a solid ride to end 43rd. Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier (61st), Ryan Gibbons (107th), Danilo Wyss (152nd), Giacomo Nizzolo (158th) and Mark Renshaw (166th) all also got through the race against the clock in good shape.
