Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka and the rest of the peloton had a challenging day on the second and final stage of Giro della Toscana. Jacques Janse van Rensburg finished as the team’s best rider on the day and in the general classification.
Early on the stage, eight riders managed to get away and create a gap on the pack. With Steve Cummings in the leader’s jersey after his stage win yesterday, Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka made sure not to let the gap get too big. The front group was never allowed much more than three minutes on the peloton.
The mountain top finish in Volterra was always expected to shake up the general classification and as the pack took on the ascent, several riders instantly tried to break away, gunning for glory. Ultimately, Guillaume Martin (Wanty – Groupe Gobert) turned out to the be strongest as he first caught and later dropped the remaining part of the early breakaway.
The Frenchman won the stage and took the overall lead from Cummings, while Janse van Rensburg crossed the line in 32nd place. In the final general classification, the former South African champion finished in 28th place.
