Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-Quickstep) won stage 16 of La Vuelta a Espana, taking the victory ahead of Jordi Meeus (Bora Hansgrohe) and Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates), in a mass sprint.
Stage 16 of La Vuelta had riders take on an undulating 180km route from Laredo to Santa Cruz de Bezana. Team Qhubeka NextHash were hopeful of the breakaway making it to the final today and so had the team on the front line from the start.
Dimitri Claeys was one of the first to attack and he was joined by 4 other riders. As they were starting to try and build their lead, a mass crash occurred in the peloton. This stopped any further riders trying to join the existing breakaway.
As the peloton regrouped, and with only 5 riders up the road, the sprinter teams felt the group ahead would be easy enough to control. They held Claeys and co. at around the 2-minute mark throughout the stage.
UAE Emirates then injected some pace at the front of the main group with around 60km to go. This did create some splits in the group and at the same time reduced the gap to the breakaway. The race then turned into a headwind which allowed another general regrouping and assured the stage would end in a mass sprint.
Jakobsen put in another impressive sprint to win his 3rd stage of the race. Team Qhubeka NextHash riders all completed the stage safely and will look for further breakaway opportunities in the coming days.
