A tough stage 3 of the Deutschland Tour saw Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Merida) take the stage victory in Merzig as a crash in the final kilometre saw a number of riders fall heavily.
Reinardt Janse van Rensburg finished 9th having luckily escaped being brought down in a spectacular crash that happened immediately in front of him.
Nils Politt (Katusha) was second with Peter Vanspeybrouck (Wanty) in 3rd place.
The 157km stage was well managed by our team as Jay Thomson and Mark Renshaw played key earlier roles on the day. Bernie Eisel then subtly guided the team into the correct crucial position for the final where Scott Davies and Jacques Janse van Rensburg expertly brought Reinardt into contention in the closing stages of the day’s racing.
He now lies 6th on the GC, 24 seconds behind the race leader Mohoric ahead of Sunday’s final stage.
Reinardt Janse van Rensburg – Rider
Really tough stage, all day up and down with lots of aggresive racing but the team did brilliantly to keep me in the front. A small group arrived at the finish and I was in a really good position with 700 metres or so to go. But then it kind of stalled and a big wave came from behind, so I was out of position and then there was a big crash right in front of me which saw my chances ruined.
The legs have come good after the Tour dr France and the BinckBank Tour so I’m in really good shape here and trying to get some victories.
We’ll have to see, there are some really hard circuits so hipefully I can still be there in the final and try again.
