Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka’s Mekseb Debesay showed off the team colors nicely in the Italian one-day race Coppa Sabatini as he joined the early breakaway. Unfortunately, the group was caught on the final kilometers.
Knowing that today’s race would most likely come down to a sprint finish, Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka was eager to make the race as hard as possible. After a fast start, a group of seven riders finally managed to distance the peloton and establish a solid gap.
Debesay had been very attentive and joined the breakaway, which quickly gained over six minutes on the pack. The front group worked well together and the peloton had to put in a huge effort in their attempt to bring it back. Ultimately, the breakaway was neutralized with just five kilometers left to go, giving the sprinters their expected chance to fight for victory. Andrea Pasqualon (Wanty – Groupe Gobert) took the win, while Daniel Teklehaimanot finished as best Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka rider on the day.
“Today, the plan was for me or Metkel [Eyob] to try to make it into the breakaway. I started in the front row and I followed the moves and got away. I spent the whole day at the front and we worked well together in the group. We got caught at the very end but I think I can be happy with how I rode today”.
