Coppa Sabatini: Boasson Hagen comes up short

Juan Jose Lobato (Nippo – Vini Fantani) sprinted to victory to take the Coppa Sabatini, ahead of Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Merida) and Gianni Moscon (Team Sky).

It was another hot day in Tuscany as our Team Dimension Data lads took on the Coppa Sabatini. A break of 6 riders animated the early part of the 201km circuit race around Peccioli but as expected, they were caught before the final 12km finishing lap.

Our African Team rode well to set up Edvald Boasson Hagen for the final uphill sprint finish, with Jacques Janse van Rensburg, Tom-Jelte Slagter, Ben O’Connor and Nic Dlamini all being very active in the final kilometers, keeping the pack together.

Boasson Hagen started the final uphill kilometer in 2nd wheel, and soon found himself on the front with still a fair way to go. The lull in pace at the front, with nobody wanting to commit too soon, was to the advantage of riders positioned further back in the bunch. JJ Lobato took his chance to leap-frog to the head of the race, starting his sprint from around 400m to go.

The Spanish rider was able to hold off the charge from Colbrelli, a 2-time winner of this race, to take a fine win. Boasson Hagen, tried to match the speed that came from behind but in the end, our Norwegian came up short and finished in 22nd place.
