Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb) took the victory in today’s final stage, ahead of Greg van Avermaet (BMC Racing) and Zdenek Stybar (Quick-Step Floors). The overall race was won by Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Merida).
Today’s final stage included climbs such as Bosberg and the Muur van Geraardsbergen. The riders tackled the Muur four times as part of the finishing loop.
Scott Thwaites featured in one of the earlier breaks of the day for our African team. The numerous ascents of the Muur van Geraardsbergen caused the peloton to fracture in the business end of racing and the winner of the stage, Michael Matthews, would come from this group. Reinardt Janse van Rensburg was our highest finisher of the day, managing to stay with the final group in the closing laps. Tom Jelte-Slagter finished 39th in the GC for us.
Tom Jelte-Slagter- Rider
“The first days of the race were super flat and all made for the spriters, so we had a few riders for that, but we didn’t manage to get the result we wanted. It wasn’t easy to be honest. It was very stressful and difficult with the small roads. You also need to have a bit of luck.
The finals of the last two days were a bit harder, which was nice. There was some movement in the peloton, where you could make some difference. Personally, I tried to do my best, these past two days. Yesterday I felt good, and I could do my thing on the climbs. With this, we can move forward to our next goals, which will be Canada.”
