BinckBank Tour #6: Vermote crashes out

Julien Vermote’s BinckBank Tour came to an unfortunate end after he sustained a wrist injury in a crash that’s ruled him out of starting Sunday’s final stage of the BinckBank Tour.

The Belgian crashed with around 60km to go, along with teammate Nic Dougall, and fell heavily injuring his wrist. Subsequent medical examination post-stage has seen him forced to abandon the race.

An exciting stage of racing was won by Gregor Muhlberger (Bora-hansgrohe) who saw off Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal), Zdenek Stybar (Quick-Step Floors) and Dylan van Baarle (Team Sky).

Tom-Jelte Slagter featured strongly in the main chasing group who eventually finished 11 seconds behind the winner, he was 27th overall. Vermote managed to complete the stage but Dougall unfortunately wasn’t able to do so.

Sunday’s stage is the final one of the race with a tough day expected as Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Merida) retains the overall race lead by 30 seconds.

Dr. Nick Theron – Team Doctor

Julien fell on his right wrist. He is OK and x-ray did not detect a fracture. Fractures are occasionally only diagnosed on follow up X-rays in 7 to 10 days time. So for now it is a wrist injury or sprain which has been put in a splint for protection and follow up investigations if necessary.

Julien Vermote – Rider

Unfortunately I have to leave the BinckBank tour due to a wrist injury and I’ll to wear a brace for a week after which I’ll undergo further examinations.

I’m really disappointed that I won’t be able to complete the race but I’ll be doing everything to recover as quickly as possible so that I can get back to racing.
