Jose Alvaro Hodeg (Deceuninck-Quickstep) sprinted to the Binck Bank Tour stage 5 victory. Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) was 2nd on the stage with Edward Theuns (Trek-Segafredo) in 3rd.
For Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka, today’s stage of the Binck Bank Tour presented an opportunity for our fast finishers, Ryan Gibbons and Reinardt Janse van Rensburg, to mix it up with some of the fastest riders in our sport.
With Michael Valgren sitting in 6th place on GC after yesterday’s tough stage, we were also riding to ensure our Dane got through the stage in good shape. The sprint finale was as chaotic as ever, with a crash in the final 500m. Fortunately none of our Team Dimension Data riders were involved.
Gibbons and Janse van Rensburg had linked up with around 2km to go, but with the jostling for position, Gibbons ended on the left side of the peloton with Janse van Rensburg going down the right, inside 1km to go.
Janse van Rensburg ended up getting boxed in and couldn’t launch his sprint. Gibbons was able to find some space on his side of the road with around 400m to go and had no choice but to start a long sprint. Our South African just got pushed out of the top 10 on the line, to finish in 12th on the stage.
At the time of going to press, Valgren was listed in 15th overall on GC with Janse van Rensburg up to 9th but it is unsure if the times will be adjusted due to the crash in the final straight.
