Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) won stage 5 of the Criterium du Dauphine while Team Qhubeka ASSOS had Carlos Barbero in the mix, finishing in 4th place on the stage.
Stage 5 of the Criterium du Dauphine was an undulating 175km from Saint-Chamond to Saint-Vallier. The race was made harder still by a danferous break going uo the road early on, which ensured the peloton kept it’s foot on the gas.
Coming into the finale, the break had been caught but the high pace throughout the day meant the peloton was reduced to just 45 riders.
It was a technical final kilometer which allowed Thomas to get the jump on the sprinters that remained in the front group. He arrived first, followed by Sonny Collbrelli (Bahrain-Victorious) and Alex Aranburu (Astana).
Barbero finished in a good 4th place for Team Qhubeka ASSOS, this after his 7th place on stage 3, showing the Spaniard is well on his way back to top form after recovering from injury.
