The 8th stage of Le Tour de Langkawi saw a pretty stock standard bunch sprint stage where Theo Bos (Belkin) picked up his 3rd victory of the race. The Dutch rider beat the fast finishing Andrea Gaurdini (Astana) and Kenny van Hummel (Androni Giocattoli) to take top honours on the day.
Once again a small break of three riders animated the day but with not a single categorized climb along the 202km route, the race was always going to end in a bunch sprint. Like clockwork, the break was caught with 11km to go. A few attacks then went off the front but with the high pace of the peloton nobody was able to get a meaningful gap.
With 3 kilometres to go there was a big crash in the peloton that held up the majority of the riders. Luckily for them the crash was deemed to be inside the final 3km’s and all the riders were given the same time.
Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung had a rather quiet day in the bunch with the only activity coming in the final few kilometres when Youcef Reguigui was set up for the sprint. Luckily the Algerian missed the pile up and was able to contest the sprint but the chaos forced the MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung fast man to start his sprint from quite far back. He ended with 12th position on the day.
The penultimate day of racing at Le Tour de Langkawi will see the riders take on a shorter 109km stage from Bandar Permaisuri to Kuala Terengganu, also expected to finish in a bunch sprint.
