The 2019 Amstel Gold Race will be remembered because of one man and one man alone, Mathieu Van der Poel (Corendon Circus). The Dutch national champion stunned all with his emphatic victory.
Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka started the day in a unique position, having the top 3 riders from last year’s edition of the race all lining up in our Dimension Data colours.
Unfortunately there was no fairy tale to be told of our race today as when the race defining splits occurred in the final 40km, it was only Roman Kreuizger left with a fighting chance in the 3rd group on the road.
Van der Poel, the Dutch sensation threw the conventional road racing rule book out the window, and came from behind to catch the late breakaway of Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quickstep) and Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) and sprint to a fine win.
Sprinting for the minor placings, Kreuziger came home in 18th place, a credible placing against a top UCI World Tour field but certainly not the result we had hoped for.
