Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix) won stage 5 of the Vuelta a Espana, from a mass sprint finish. Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-Quickstep) was 2nd and Alberto Dainese (Team DSM) 3rd.
Stage 5 of the Vuelta a Espana was another day for the fast men, as riders took on a flat 184km from Tarancon to Albecete. It was mostly quite a calm stage, until the sprint teams picked up the pace over the final 20km.
Team Qhubeka NextHash priorities were to keep Fabio Aru safe through the finale and then also deliver Reinardt Janse van Rensburg to the line, in a good position to contest for a stage result.
The team rode well together and were able to react to a chaotic situation with 11km to go. A mass crash occurred in the peloton, with around 70% of the peloton caught up in it. Apart from Janse van Rensburg, all our other Team Qhubeka NextHash riders were involved, including Aru.
After some quick thinking by Dimitri Claeys, he assisted his Italian teammate with a mechanical problem and then the team was able to pace Aru back to the peloton before the sprint finale. Bert Jan-Lindeman was the worst affected by the crash though, requiring a laceration on his left knee to be stitched up after completing the stage.
In the sprint for the line, Janse van Rensburg managed to get himself into a good position, coming off the wheel of Philpsen. The South African saw a gap down the left side, where he could launch his sprint, and took his shot. Taking more wind than some of the others, Janse van Rensburg showed good speed but would ultimately fade in the wind just before the line, taking 9th place.
