Cesare Benedetti (Bora-Hansgrohe) won stage 12 of the Giro d’Italia, beating his breakaway counterparts, Damiano Caruso (Bahrain-Merida) and Eddie Dunbar (Team Ineos). Stage 12 of the Giro d’Italia saw the first real mountain of the race, as the 158km stage included the 9km Montoso climb. At 9.3% average gradient, it was a beast of climb that peaked with 32km to go. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka got the stage off with a bang as Enrico Gasparotto and Danilo Wyss infiltrated the 24 rider break of the day. The peloton let the big group gain as much as 15-minutes before starting to try and reel them.
