Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix) won the 2nd stage of the Vuelta a Espana, from a mass sprint finish. Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-Quickstep) was 2nd and Michael Matthews (Team BikeExchange) placed 3rd.
Stage 2 of the Vuelta a Espana was a flat 166km route from Caleruega to Burgos. A slightly nervous peloton rolled off in the baking afternoon sun, as the threat of of crosswinds was on every riders mind.
However, the wind never really got up at any point in the stage and the peloton was easily able to control the gap to an early 3-rider breakaway, setting up a mass sprint finale.
Team Qhubeka NextHash were looking to Reinardt Janse van Rensburg for the sprint and the team did well to keep the South African out of trouble throughout the day. Coming into Burgos, Janse van Rensburg started to move up, looking for a fast wheel to follow in the final kilometers.
A crash with around 4km to go disrupted the leadout somewhat, and while Janse van Rensburg did have to scrub off some speed at that point, he and the rest of his teammates managed to avoid going down.
After the final left hand corner, Alpecin launched Philipsen to the line perfectly and he took a solid victory. Janse van Rensburg was just too far back when things opened up and he crossed the line 13th in the stage.
All other Team Qhubeka NextHash riders got through the stage without issue.
